The Maid of Orléans

Rorate Caeli has a beautiful series on St. Joan of Arc, written by Côme de Prévigny. The most moving, perhaps, is the last installment, in which the Maid faces her death. The author poses a most apt question for our times:
On her was placed a headgear on which the points of condemnation, that her detractors repeated unceasingly, were written: "heretic, schismatic, relapser". What pain is more vicious for the true servants of the Church than that of feeling isolated at the end of their lives, rejected by their authorities at the same time in which places of honor are often granted to those who mistreat the essential truths of the Faith?
Those aware of the crisis in the Church will understand well.

  1. I read the whole piece from Come de Previgny, as I hadn't read it before. It was a tragedy.

Firstly I understand what you mean about the Crisis of the Church in relation to this piece. Ultimately I don't think the Church knew exactly what they were doing. This was a brutal time in our history.

There is one paradoxical plus, and only upside to St. Joan of Arc being martyred: She most likely wouldn't have touched our hearts as she does today. At least we know that she'll live indefinitely in our history.
