Cardinal Burke, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura,
predicts formation of a new rite of Mass:
In time, Cardinal Burke expects the Western Church’s ancient and modern forms of Mass to be combined in one normative rite, a move he suggests the Pope also favors.
“It seems, to me, that what he has in mind is that this mutual enrichment would seem to naturally produce a new form of the Roman rite — the ‘reform of the reform,’ if we may — all of which I would welcome and look forward to its advent.”
Iiiinteresting...
Wasn't that what we were supposed to get after the council in the first place, an organic development? The old Mass, but with an expanded and perhaps translated lectionary, a simplified calendar, a bit more dialogue, and maybe a few little tweaks (I'll suggest one: put the Last Gospel before the Ita, Missa est---if the priest says "go, it is ended," it seems it should be ended).
ReplyDeleteOf course there's no telling how long we would have to wait to be sure the results would be salutary.
I can't think of anything that the Novus Ordo, at least the way I've seen it celebrated, could really bring to the table in terms of "enrichment". Why dilute the wine with such water?
